Combiner Box Protection for DC Solar Photovoltaic Installations (Compatible with 1 or 2 strings)

SolarSafe Plug & Play Combiner Box: The Photovoltaic Protection Box that Accelerates Installation

SolarSafe is JSL – Material Eléctrico’s answer to the daily challenge faced by those who install photovoltaic solar systems: ensuring certified electrical protection without sacrificing installation time. Designed and manufactured in Portugal, it is a factory pre-wired combiner box that brings together, in a single watertight unit, all the protection devices required for the direct current (DC) side at the output of the solar panels.

What a Combiner Box Is For (and Why It Cannot Be Improvised)

Between the photovoltaic modules and the inverter there is always a critical section: the direct current produced by the panels travels through cables exposed to sun, humidity, and the electromagnetic fields of lightning strikes. Without a dedicated protection board, any overvoltage or short circuit can irreparably damage modules worth thousands of euros — or, worse, create a fire risk. The combiner box centralizes the connections from the different strings, integrates DC surge protection (DC SPD), and DC disconnection/fuse devices, and electrically separates the solar array from the inverter. Improvising this equipment with loose components compromises the system warranty and may invalidate the installation’s insurance.

Technical Advantages of SolarSafe

SolarSafe stands out through a set of engineering decisions based on direct feedback from installers on-site:

Complete factory pre-wiring — all internal connections come ready, tested, and certified, eliminating human error in the field and reducing assembly time from hours to minutes.

Standard MC4 connectors — direct compatibility with the vast majority of photovoltaic panels on the market, with no need for adapters or on-site crimping. Just plug in and connect.

Integrated DC surge protection — surge arresters sized for the maximum open-circuit voltage typical of residential and commercial installations.

DC disconnection and overcurrent protection — fuses and/or circuit breakers certified for direct current, unlike AC-rated equipment, which fails catastrophically when used in solar systems.

Watertight enclosure with high IP protection rating — manufactured from UV-resistant thermoplastic material, ready for outdoor installation, near the panels or on the building facade.

Easy technical access — the interior is organized for fast inspection and maintenance, without needing to dismantle the installation.

Who Is SolarSafe For?

For the electrician installer, SolarSafe offers predictability: arrive on-site, mount, make the DC and AC connections, and the photovoltaic protection is resolved and fully compliant. For the designer/engineer, it provides a single, certified, and traceable reference to include in technical specifications and drawings. For the end client — whether residential self-consumption or a higher-power industrial installation — it offers the peace of mind of knowing that the investment in panels and inverter is protected against the main electrical failure modes affecting solar systems in Portugal.

Compliance, Quality, and JSL Support

Like all electrical material produced by JSL, SolarSafe is manufactured in compliance with the applicable European standards for low-voltage switchgear and photovoltaic installation equipment. Each unit is accompanied by technical documentation, wiring diagrams, and direct support from the JSL technical team for sizing or monitoring system integration queries.
